LED bulbs are known for their long operating life. A typical quality LED bulb can last around 15,000–25,000 hours, while some higher-quality LED products are rated for 30,000–50,000 hours or more under specified operating conditions.

However, the rated lifetime does not necessarily mean the bulb suddenly stops working after that number of hours. For LEDs, lifetime is often based on lumen maintenance—how much light the product continues to produce over time.

If an LED bulb operates for 3 hours per day:

25,000 ÷ 5 ÷ 365 ≈ 13.7 years

At 8 hours per day:

Do LEDs Really Last 25,000 Hours?

Although LEDs are more efficient than incandescent lamps, they still generate heat.

The thermal path is approximately:

It is important to distinguish between the LED component and the finished LED bulb.

An LED chip may have excellent long-term reliability, but the complete bulb can fail earlier because of:

Driver failure

Poor thermal design

Electrical surges

Poor-quality components

High operating temperature

Moisture

Therefore, when evaluating an LED bulb manufacturer, don't look only at the LED chip's claimed lifetime.

Does Switching LEDs On and Off Reduce Their Life?

This provides a much more useful picture of expected performance.

LED Lifetime and Warranty Are Different

A product rated for 50,000 hours does not necessarily come with a 50,000-hour warranty.

For example, a manufacturer may offer a 3-year, 5-year, or 10-year warranty depending on the product and application.

Lifetime is an engineering estimate under specified conditions, while warranty terms are a manufacturer's contractual commitment.

How Long Do LED Bulbs Last Compared With Incandescent Bulbs?

The difference can be substantial.

A typical incandescent bulb may be rated around 1,000 hours, while a typical LED bulb may be rated around 15,000–25,000 hours.

At 3 hours of daily use:

1,000 hours ≈ 0.9 years

25,000 hours ≈ 22.8 years
