What Does Red Light Therapy Do

Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation (PBM), uses low-intensity red and/or near-infrared light to produce biological effects in cells. It is different from UV light and is not intended to heat or burn the skin.

Research suggests PBM may influence cellular energy production, inflammation, pain signaling, and tissue repair, although the strength of evidence varies considerably by condition.

Potential Benefits

1. Skin health
Red-light devices are commonly studied for skin-related applications, including supporting skin appearance and certain dermatological treatments.

2. Pain and inflammation
PBM has been investigated for musculoskeletal pain and inflammatory conditions. An umbrella review of randomized-trial meta-analyses found evidence of benefit for some outcomes, including pain-related conditions, but many other outcomes had low or very-low certainty.

3. Wound and tissue repair
PBM has been studied as an adjunct for wound healing and tissue repair. Evidence is promising for some types of wounds, but results are not consistent across all wound types. For example, a 2026 meta-analysis found no statistically significant improvement for venous leg ulcers and emphasized substantial heterogeneity and methodological limitations.

4. Hair growth
There is clinical evidence supporting PBM as one treatment option for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss); a 2025 expert consensus identified androgenetic alopecia among conditions for which PBM can be effective.

5. Nerve-related conditions
The 2025 clinical consensus found evidence supporting PBM for peripheral neuropathy in appropriate clinical contexts.

What Wavelengths Are Used?

Common PBM devices use wavelengths such as:

  • 630–660 nm — visible red

  • 810–830 nm — near infrared

  • 850 nm — near infrared

A device may combine 660 nm red + 850 nm NIR.

The wavelength isn't the only important specification. Irradiance (mW/cm²), dose (J/cm²), exposure time, treatment distance, and treatment area all affect the result.

Does More Light Mean Better Results?

Not necessarily.

PBM has a dose-response relationship, meaning increasing light intensity or treatment time indefinitely does not necessarily produce better results. This is one reason professional devices specify treatment parameters rather than simply advertising a very high LED power.

Is Red Light Therapy a Cure?

No. Red light therapy should generally be considered a complementary treatment, not a universal cure.

The evidence is strongest for some specific applications and much less certain for many of the broader claims made in consumer marketing. Home-use PBM studies have reported positive results for several conditions, but systematic reviews have also emphasized the need for larger, better-controlled trials and standardized treatment protocols.

Red light is generally used for more superficial applications, while near-infrared wavelengths are often selected when deeper tissue exposure is desired. This is a simplified distinction—the actual penetration and biological response depend on wavelength, tissue and treatment parameters.

Bottom Line

Red light therapy may help support cellular processes, reduce certain types of pain, assist some tissue-repair processes, improve certain skin outcomes, and support hair growth in androgenetic alopecia. However, benefits are highly application-dependent, and it should not be assumed that every red LED lamp will produce therapeutic effects.

For an LED manufacturer, the key product specifications are wavelength + irradiance + optical dose + uniformity + thermal management, rather than simply the fact that the LEDs appear red.
